The Journey of Polin Sans: A Multiscript Typeface Inspired by Modernism

For years, I've pondered over crafting a type family that delves into the depths of modernist aesthetics, drawing inspiration from Władysław Strzemiński's "a.r." alphabet and the pre-war Warsaw of multiscript allure. Thus, the genesis of the Polin Sans typeface was conceived. Delving into geometric renditions of the Cyrillic alphabet, my muse ignited with the discourse found in "Towards an open layout: A letter to Volodya Yefimov." Here, the revelation struck that circular forms, reminiscent of Bulgarian Cyrillic, seamlessly meld with the classical version, enhancing rather than hindering readability.

Simultaneously, while immersed in the realm of typoteka.pl, the allure of the Hebrew jaffa typeface by the Idźkowski & Sk-a foundry captivated me. It seemed a Hebrew counterpart to Strzemiński's "a.r." alphabet. This collaboration welcomed Ben Nathan from Israel, masterfully weaving his native script into the narrative. The initial idea of a multiscript venture soon burgeoned to encompass Greek and Vietnamese scripts.

Thus, Polin Sans emerges as a historical odyssey through the intricate alleys of Polish modernism, curated by individuals with richly diverse cultural tapestries. The collaborative effort of Mateusz Machalski and Ben Nathan, bolstered by the invaluable support of Michał Gorczyca and Małgorzata Bartosik, has birthed a typeface that transcends borders, weaving together the threads of heritage and modernity.
